Meditation Group at Emmanuel

Pentecost

Have you ever wanted to learn about Christian forms of meditation?  Or perhaps you've tried to meditate and found it difficult.  If so, come and join us on Thursday nights in the sanctuary from 7-8:30.  Our evenings typically consist of a short reading from a spiritual book followed by discussion, practice of one or two forms of Christian meditation, and intercessory prayer.  No experience is necessary.  Come and bring an open mind, an open heart, and a desire to be in God's Presence.   One of the joys of meditating with a group is that it is easier to go more deeply into God's Presence than it is alone.  This is true for experienced meditators as well as beginners.

There are many types of Christian meditation, so one may appeal to you more than another.  Some of the types we practice include Centering Prayer, visualization, Lectio Divina, the Jesus Prayer, breath prayer, recollection, chanting, and walking.  If you are unfamiliar with the type of meditation we'll be practicing on a particular evening, that type will be explained before we practice.

There are no quizzes and no expectations.  Meditation is a practice; and every time we meditate, the experience is different.  Some times our minds chatter incessantly; some times our minds are very still; and some times we fall asleep.  Usually, it's a mix of chatter and stillness.  There is no instant result or gratification; meditation is not a McSpirit burger.  But over time, you may notice that you become more patient, more compassionate, more loving, more peaceful.  As we sit in meditation in God's Presence, we may be graced to become more aware of His Presence with us every moment of every day.  So, if this sounds good to you, please come and join us!
