 Dear Contact First Name,

It's so good to be back! I am reminded anew what a wonderful congregation this is--lively, loving, and listening to the Holy Spirit. What a treasure! May God continue to guard our hearts and guide our steps so that we might live out God's plan and purpose for us!

With love in Christ,
Fr. Rob+

P.S. Plus a big THANK YOU! to Mo Lyn for all her faithful ministry during my absence.

A Farewell to Mary Shaw

It is time to say "farewell" to Mary Shaw as she moves up north to be with family-like friends. Here is a tribute written by Marci Taylor Stewart to celebrate her gifts to Emmanuel and the wider community. We will miss you, Mary!

A LITTLE OVER THIRTY YEARS AGO, MY FRIEND MARY SHAW, A LIFE-LONG METHODIST, MADE A SIGNIFICANT CHANGE TO THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH.

MARY AND I WERE BOTH SERVING ON THE ORANGE COUNTY ALCOHOL BOARD, A POLITICAL APPOINTMENT, SHE AS CHAIRWOMAN AND I, LATER AS CHAIR.  WHILE DRIVING TO THE WEEKLY MEETINGS IN SANTA ANA WHERE WE ADVOCATED FOR THOSE STRUGGLING WITH THE DISEASE OF ADDICTION, WE OFTEN DISCUSSED ISSUES OF FAITH INCLUDING LAY MINISTRY AND PRAYER,  AS WELL AS ACTIVE INVOLVEMENT WITH ISSUES OF HOMELESSNESS, POVERTY AND RACISM.  BOTH OF US WITH OUR ROCK-SOLID BELIEF IN THE WORDS OF JESUS FOUND IN MATTHEW'S GOSPEL, FOUND OUR CHURCH HOME AT EMMANUEL, AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE PEOPLE LIVED THE GOSPEL OF LOVE THROUGH ACTION.

FOR YEARS, MARY WAS THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER ACADEMIC COUNSELOR AT FULLERTON COLLEGE WHERE LONG LINES OF PATIENT STUDENTS FILLED THE HALLWAY IN FRONT OF HER OFFICE. THEY HAD HEARD THE OFTEN-REPEATED WORDS, "YOU NEED TO SEE MARY SHAW.  SHE'LL OFFER YOU THE BEST HELP IN STRUCTURING YOUR CLASSES AND ALSO IN MEETING EVERYDAY LIFE CHALLENGES."

MARY DEVELOPED A CLASS FOR WOMEN RETURNING TO SCHOOL WITH SELF ESTEEM ISSUES; SHE HELD BI-YEARLY LUNCHEONS FOR THE WOMEN TO HEAR FROM THOSE WHO HAD SUCCESSFULLY NAVIGATED ACADEMIA AND NOW HAD MEANINGFUL EMPLOYMENT.  IN ADDITION TO HER COUNSELING JOB, MARY STUDIED MARINE BIOLOGY IN ORDER TO WORK WITH STUDENTS INTERESTED IN A CAREER IN OCEANOGRAPHY.  DURING A NUMBER OF YEARS, MARINE BIOLOGY AND ENGINEERING TOOK HER TO OVER SIXTY-FIVE COUNTRIES.

IN ADDITION TO HER MANY COLLEGE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ON INTO RETIREMENT, SHE HAS ACTIVELY PARTICIPATED ON NUMEROUS BOARDS OF DIRECTORS: FULLERTON COLLEGE FOUNDATION, YWCA OF NO. ORANGE COUNTY, THE VILLA, PATHWAYS OF HOPE AND ABRAHAM HOUSE.

AFTER HER MANY YEARS OF SERVICE IN ORANGE COUNTY AND MAKING HUNDREDS OF FRIENDS, MARY WILL BE MOVING UP TO NORTHERN CALIFORNIA NEAR LONGTIME FRIENDS AND LIVING IN A SENIOR RETIREMENT HOME.  SHE WILL BE SORELY MISSED AND YET, WE KNOW THE LORD HAS MORE PEOPLE AND PLACES FOR HER SENSITIVE AND KNOWLEDGABLE INVOLVEMENT.

RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED, MARCI TAYLOR STEWART

Poinsettias and Wreaths for Christmas

There is not much time left to get your order in for Poinsettias and wreaths. I will turn in the orders for Thanksgiving delivery today, Thursday, November 5 at the end of the day. But will continue to take orders through November 15. We also need a few more for the church, 6 or 8" and the 28" wreaths. SEE YOU SUNDAY ON THE PATIO.

Bishop Michael Curry was installed as Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church this past Sunday. What an inspiring saint of God! He is passionate about Jesus as Lord and Savior and whole-heartedly calling us to go out into the world as ambassadors of God's love.
