Last Sunday we learned about Jesus' use of hyperbole in his teaching. And then since he had our attention with the threat of eternal fire, we looked at what the real message of the gospel was for this week. We were reminded that there are over 300 admonitions in scripture to care for the poor, 100 of them coming from Jesus. And there was the thought provoking suggestion that given the present political climate, with social welfare programs being cut in many areas, the members of the church might have to become what they were taught by Jesus to be....those who care for the poor, the marginalized, the widows, the orphans and those suffering from injustice. Finally we remembered the tune from My Fair Lady and thought it might be a theme song for the church..."Don't Talk of Love, Show Me!"

With much love,
Mo. Lyn+

Look Out For the Advent Shoes

Twenty one years ago the gospel reading for the first Sunday in Advent was the same one we will be hearing this coming Sunday. It speaks about a time when the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. In November of that year, a catalogue arrived in my mailbox and in it, an amazing pair of shoes for sale, complete with moons and stars and purple shoelaces. I just had to have them. I preached that first Advent Sunday on the gospel wearing my "Advent shoes". And I have worn them every Sunday of Advent since. Don't miss their reappearance for the next four Sundays! It may be your LAAST chance to see them!

Las Posadas
Sunday December 10th at 6:00 pm

Las Posadas has become an Advent tradition at Emmanuel. First there is the journey around the campus by candlelight knocking at the doors of different inns looking for a place for Mary to give birth to the Christ child. At the last door we are welcomed by a friendly inn keeper and we have an amazing tamale feast hosted by the Ortiz family. Then there is the fun of the pinata enjoyed by the children. Come and join the fun!!!
