This Sunday's sermon approached the subject of the Transfiguration, and the mountain-top experience of Peter, James and John. In particular we looked at Peter's reluctance to come down from the mountain-top. Then we heard one person's experience of trying to stay on the mountain-top and making the main goal of life to be the good feelings, the joy and peace of that place. We learned that those things will come to us, if we accept Jesus' number one priority...witnessing to the world in loving service. If we continue to seek the Spirit of God primarily with ourselves in mind, we will never fully experience the Spirit of God with us. When we surrender ourselves totally to God, in service to others, God uses our hands to do what He would do, our feet to travel where He would go, our minds and voices to witness to those He would reach out to, our arms to enfold those He loves. For we are the completion of His ministry here on earth. We can see with the eyes of Christ, listen with the ears of Christ, and love with the heart of Christ, providing we choose to live a self-giving life. God invites us to come down from our mountain-top experiences, to descend to the valley below in loving self-giving service, caring only to share Him and His light with a world that struggles in the darkness.

With much love,

Mo. Lyn+

Shadow and Light

The Lenten tradition of a weekly adult Lenten program continues this year at Emmanuel. The program, entitled Shadow and Light, the Journey Inward, will be led by Mo. Lyn+ and will be held on Tuesday nights Feb 20th (that's this Tuesday!) and February 27th, March 6th, 13th, and 20th. The program will first explore the concepts of shadow and light as interior conditions. How do we find the Light? Does everyone have interior shadow? Then together, participants will explore our own brokenness and that of others. Is it possible to love ourselves and others if we discover that we are flawed? How do we do this? How do we heal our brokenness? We will discuss two possible approaches, The Way of the Warrior and the Way of the Adventurer. Please join us as we spend this Lent preparing ourselves for the great Feast of Easter. The program will begin at 7:00 pm with a time of social interaction followed by a musical warm- up and the lesson. Our time together will conclude at 8:30 pm.

  Celebration of Life

The memorial service for Yvonne Conklin will be held here at Emmanuel this Saturday February 17th at 10:00 am followed by a reception. Everyone is invited to come and give thanks for her life and her ministry!

The memorial service for Joanie Schmid will be held at Emmanuel this Sunday, February 18th at 4:00 pm. Her family wanted to be sure that the entire Emmanuel community was invited to come and celebrate her life. Emmanuel meant so much to Joanie. She was always so grateful that Al had brought her here and introduced her to us!!!

Photo of the Week

I am feeling grateful for the music ministry of Paul and Rosa Dobies. Paul has faithfully volunteered his time and talent at the ten o'clock service for as long as I have been here (22 1/2 years) and even before that. What a gift he gives us each and every week! Later, his wife Rosa joined him in the music group with her beautiful artistry on violin. When you think of it, please let them both know how much you appreciate their gifts of time and talent to Emmanuel.
